Jurassic Park’s 30th Anniversary Box Office Proves People Still Love Spielberg’s Dinos

A movie grossing less than $2 million isn’t going to light up Hollywood’s radar or anything, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Universal got some money, and movie theaters had to put some extra meat on the seats for a tried-and-true classic. More than anything, it’s a reminder that audiences still really love this movie, suggesting that, for many, it has stood the test of time even against modern reviews. Given that I personally consider this to be my favorite film of all time, I’ll refrain from commenting too much here, but it does my heart good, that’s for sure.

In the three decades since “Jurassic Park” was released, Universal has turned it into a hugely successful franchise that has grossed more than $6 billion at the worldwide box office across six films. 2015’s “Jurassic World” ($1.67 billion worldwide) is one of the highest-grossing films ever released. Even last year’s “Jurassic World Domination,” which wasn’t nearly as well received by audiences or critics, managed to top $1 billion worldwide. People love this world, and it all starts with Spielberg’s groundbreaking interpretation of Michael Crichton’s novel.

For the future? Producer Frank Marshall hinted to /Film last year that “Dominion” wasn’t going to be the end of the franchise, just the end of the trilogy. That said, as of now, Universal hasn’t officially announced anything. But this past weekend’s box office will likely suggest to studio brass that it’s worth trying to milk this cash cow more. Life finds a way, as it were.
